Prospect Watch: El Paso led 4-2 going into the ninth but the Space Cowboys plated five runs in the ninth to pull ahead. Tommy Nance had two outs and struck out Luke Berryhill to seemingly end the game. However, on the dropped third strike, Berryhill ran to first base. catcher Brett Sullivan fired the ball to first baseman Nate Mondou, who was late covering the bag and dropped the ball. The inning continued, allowing the Space Cowboys to plate the winning runs. … Sullivan, in his first game back with El Paso after a three week stint with the Padres, connected on his 12th homer of the season and drew a walk hitting out of the leadoff spot. With 12 homers in the PCL this year, Sullivan is now just one off his career high. Overall, the former big leaguer has a .908 OPS. … Tirso Ornelas celebrated his addition to the 40-man roster by swatting his team-leading 13th homer of the season. Ornelas, 24, was part of the Padres’ pricey international free agent class of 2016 that hasn’t delivered on the potential that the Padres were looking for when they spent $100 million, including penalties. However, Ornelas has put things together this season and is in the midst of his finest offensive season as a professional. He is currently sporting a career-high .907 OPS with El Paso in 2024. … Despite losing in a gut-wrenching fashion, the Chihuahuas got another fantastic outing from pitcher Gabe Mosser. The right-hander pitched six strong innings, allowing just two runs on three hits. He walked one and struck out a season-high eight batters. The 28-year-old from Shippensburg has a 5.07 ERA in 17 games (16 starts) for El Paso. If you take away his disastrous season debut when he gave up seven earned runs in just a third of an inning, his ERA is a solid 4.26.

Prospect Watch: The Travelers used a four-run fourth inning to beat the MIssions in Little Rock. … Cole Cummings blasted a homer, his only hit of the night. It was the UC Santa Barbara product’s seventh homer of the season. The corner outfielder, who signed as an undrafted free agent in 2021, has been a solid and steady contributor offensively for the Missions in 2024. He has 20 doubles and a .721 OPS while hitting in the middle of the order. He has struggled at times to make contact; his 30% K-rate is the 10th-highest in the circuit. … Righty Victor Lizarraga battled command issues and took the loss. The 20-year-old only allowed one hit over 4.1 innings, but he walked five batters and allowed three earned runs. The five walks were the most Lizarraga allowed in a game since September 14, 2021, when he was pitching in the complex league. Texas League batters are hitting just .220 against the righty – the best mark he has posted as a professional. … David Morgan recorded the final five outs, striking out four Travelers. The 24-year-old from Hope International University in Orange County, California has provided incredible value after signing with the Padres as an undrafted free agent in 2022. Since his promotion to San Antonio, Morgan has struck out 16 batters in 12.1 innings while pitching to a 3.65 ERA. The former junior college center fielder can touch 98 mph with his fastball which he pairs with an excellent slider.

Prospect Watch: The TInCaps notched 10 hits but went just 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position, losing at home to Lake County. … Devin Ortiz had three of the club’s hits, including a double. The 25-year-old has been streaky for the TinCaps this season while being the primary third baseman. Ortiz had a brutal June, hitting .158/.253/.197 but he’s been much better in July, turning things around to post a .324/.390/.405 line. … Nick Vogt singled twice and drove in a run in the TinCaps’ loss. The 23-year-old got off to a slow start after being promoted to Fort Wayne at the end of June but he’s 6-for-16 over his last four games, raising his batting average from .185 to.256. Overall, the former UC Santa Barbara outfielder has a .744 OPS between Lake Elsinore and Fort Wayne this season. … Jagger Haynes made the start Friday and struggled to consistently throw strikes. Haynes needed 65 pitches to get through three innings. He allowed two runs on two hits, walking four and striking out five. It was the second consecutive start that Haynes has allowed four walks. After a poor start to the season, Haynes has been one of the most promising starting pitchers in the entire system. Since May 1, Haynes has pitched to a 3.07 ERA. He will need to find the zone more consistently, but his development has been one of the big storylines out of the Summit City this season.

Prospect Watch: The Storm used an eight-run second inning to vaporize the Quakes on the road in the 909 area code. … Shortstop Leo De Vries set the tone early, hammering the game’s first pitch to right-center for a booming homer – his sixth of the season. The 17-year-old has five homers in July, hitting an incredible .327/.441/.694 this month. He’s walked 10 times against just eight strikeouts this month. He’s also added eight stolen bases. The young shortstop has gotten better in the field as the season has progressed, showing true five-tool potential. … Jacob Campbell had two hits, including his seventh homer in 47 games this season. He also drove in a career-high five runs in the blowout victory. The 24-year-old has learned to play the outfield on the fly, and while the defense has been a work in progress, the bat has been impressive. Campbell has frequently hit the ball hard and has shown impressive power while hitting in the middle of the Storm’s order. … Wyatt Hoffman tied a career-high with four hits, including his third homer of the season – a towering drive down the left field line in the second inning. The 25-year-old added three singles and a pair of stolen bases, giving him 14 this season. The versatile Hoffman has played a lot of outfield for the Storm this season and has looked fine while playing on the corners. Hoffman has a .666 OPS which represents a career-high. His strikeout rate is much too high but he has evolved into a player who can give Lake Elsinore a good at-bat while providing solid defense and baserunning for a team loaded with undrafted free agents. … Reliever Will Varmette picked up the win for the Storm after Ian Koenig started and starter Eric Yost made an abbreviated appearance out of the bullpen. The Alabama native pitched two scoreless innings, striking out three in the process. Varmette has won two of his three appearances in July while pitching to a 4.50 ERA.  He has a high-octane arm, but has struggled with control and command as he tries to put things together.

The 20-year-old was drafted in the fourth round in 2022, out of high school in the Baltimore area. After having right shoulder surgery last October, King still isn’t ready to catch in games, but in 33 games in the desert, King has posted a solid .801 OPS. … First baseman Hugo Sanchez extended his hitting streak to six games with a three-hit performance. He had a pair of doubles, a single and scored three runs. The 21-year-old from Guadalajara, Mexico has raised his batting average nearly 100 points during the hitting streak. Overall, he is hitting .254/.320/.403 in the desert this year. … While De Vries was the headliner of the Padres’ international free agent class this season, righty Humberto Cruz was the Padres’ second-biggest prize. The organization moved lefty Blake Dickerson and outfielder Oliver Carrillo for extra money in their bonus pool to sign the Mexican-born righty. Cruz, who has been at the complex in Peoria for about a month, made his organizational debut with a scoreless inning, notching a strikeout as he ran his fastball up to 97. With the ACL season winding down, the 17-year-old should continue to work in the desert in the bridge league activity that will get underway in the coming weeks. … Lefty Zack Qin pitched three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. He notched five strikeouts without walking a batter. The 19-year-old from China was hurt early in the ACL season but is making up for lost time. 1. The BB ref tool has some weird hiccups like that sometimes (we were probably the top referrer to Homer Bush SENIOR’s page in the first two months of the season!) We’ll keep an eye on that one.
